Safety Comes Standard

No matter where you're headed this summer, we want all your journeys to be safe and enjoyable. That's why every Volvo car comes with standard innovations designed to help protect you all year long. Safety has always been one of our core values and our vision is that no one should be killed or seriously injured in a new Volvo car.

More Eyes on the Road Ahead

City Safety is the world's first automatic braking system that uses an advanced radar and a camera to detect pedestrians, cyclists, large animals and other vehicles. It warns you and automatically brakes if you don't react in time to help avoid or mitigate a collision. This high-tech system includes Pedestrian Detection with Auto Brake which is designed to help protect those inside and outside the car.

Sees Where You Can't

Blind Spot Information System (BLIS), which Volvo invented over a decade ago, was a world-first in passenger vehicles. Using radar sensors, BLIS helps you change lanes safely by detecting other vehicles that are approaching from behind - and alerting you. If needed, the Steer Assist function will gently steer you back into your lane.

Safer for Everyone

Women are at a higher risk of whiplash than men, which can be attributed to different anatomy and body strength. The new seat design has reduced whiplash by 50%, thanks to our Whiplash Protection System (WHIPS). It combines a unique head restraint with clever seat design to protect both head and spine in backseats; and we no longer see a difference in whiplash risk between men and women. To help protect you in a side collision, the Side Impact Protection System (SIPS) absorbs force with a smart safety cage, energy redirecting cross bars and side airbags.

Protecting Other Drivers

Driving an SUV shouldn't make you more dangerous to smaller vehicles. That's why the XC90 was built with a unique Crash Compatibility Structure. Its innovative design helps to keep smaller cars and their passengers safer in the event of a collision, minimizing risk and damage.

E.V.A.: Equal Vehicles for All

It all started in 1959, when Volvo invented the three-point safety belt and waived the patent right so that every car manufacturer could benefit. That decision has helped to save over one million lives. We continue our mission today with the E.V.A. Initiative by sharing more than 40 years of research to help make cars safer for everyone.
