The Volvo XC90 is available with three different powertrains. The base choice, the T5, features a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that makes a muscular 250 horsepower. The T6 configuration adds a supercharger to the engine found on T5 versions of the Volvo XC90. This raises the horsepower output to a whopping 316 ponies.
The most powerful choice, however, is the plug-in hybrid version of the car. It pairs the T6 super- and turbocharged engine with a battery-and-motor system for 455 horsepower. As you blow by sedans and other SUVs on the highway, their drivers will wonder how your family-sized car is also so powerful.
As we compare Volvo XC90 and Lexus RX 350, we see that the latter has fewer available engines. The Lexus RX 350 has just one available. Its 3.5-liter V-6 makes 295 horsepower. Hybrid versions of the Lexus RX exist; these versions are badged as 450h models. The hybrid powertrain adds a battery-and-motor system to the Lexus SUV, but it only raises horsepower output to 308.
In the Volvo XC90 vs. RX 350 battle, the Volvo SUV dominates the performance category. It has a faster 0 to 60 speed and better engine options all-around. Will this hold up for the other categories?
